10 tips for taking great photos

Summer is a sunny time of year, the perfect opportunity to take some beautiful, sunny photos of your activity. The best time is now!

Did you know? A good photo makes people want to know more and improves your click-through rate on the Internet.

As a partner, your beautiful photos can be used to highlight your activity on brochures and your web page, which can be viewed on the various Destination Les Sables d'Olonne websites.

A good photo is worth all the talk! Think about it!

01 ' Coast of light
  • I always photograph in good weather.
  • Indoors, I turn on the lights.
  • I photograph when the light is good and the shadows are sharp, i.e. in the morning and in the evening (when the sun isn't too high in the sky).
02 ' I put myself in the customer's shoes

What story do you want to tell to persuade people to come to your studio?
I compose my photo, taking care with the staging, lighting and framing.

Example: I want to photograph my terrace with a holiday atmosphere:

  • I open the parasol,
  • I place some glasses filled with a drink on the table.
  • I open the shutters.
  • I avoid showing a terrace with damp ground.
  • I decorate with plants, books, crockery, cushions, accessories, etc.
03 ' I avoid backlighting

With the sun always behind me, I avoid taking photos against the light.

04 ' I photograph in both directions

With my camera or smartphone, I take the same photo in 2 directions, horizontally and vertically.
I also vary the angles because, depending on the media (guides, websites, etc.), I may need several formats:

  • close-up
  • medium shot
  • overview.
05 ' I think about the details

When taking photographs, I pay attention to technical details.
Examples: In a bedroom, I avoid light switches and electrical sockets.
On my terrace, I hide rubbish bins.
In the street, I avoid cars or people in the background.

06 ' I approach

It's better to get closer than to zoom in!
The closer you get to the object you want to photograph, the better the image quality.

07 ' Framing

I frame and place the horizon line at 1/3 of the image.
To highlight my subject, I lower my lens a little.

08 ' With extras

With extras, I keep written authorisations (use, date, etc.).
For children, I obtain authorisations from the 2 holders of parental authority.

09 ' I delegate
  • I get help from a professional photographer.
  • I prepare my specifications in advance (objectives, scope of the assignment, extras/accessories, etc.).
  • I draw up a detailed assignment of rights with the photographer (period of validity, photos concerned, authorised distributors, authorised media, use reproduction/exploitation/modification/exclusivity, etc.).
10 ' I share

To increase visibility, I share my photos on Instagram, Facebook... using the hashtags #lessablesdolonne #destinationlessablesdolonne

In this way, I can show off the authenticity of the destination and trigger a desire to go on holiday!

10 best practices on Instagram

A few tips for free visibility on Instagram ...
  1. Choose a thoughtful usernameYourusername should match the name of your brand and your field of activity, be memorable and simple to remember so that people can find you easily. If possible, use the same username on all your social networks to maintain consistency and gain credibility.
  2. Take care with your biography.
    In 150 characters, explain briefly and precisely who you are, what you do and where you are located, while conveying the personality of your brand. You can also add a few hashtags (#) relevant to your field to make your profile appear in searches and increase your visibility on the platform.
  3. Create a professional account, preferably
    Upgrade your personal Instagram account to a professional account for additional features such as :
    your statistics (number of followers, performance of your posts).
    On the other hand, the choice of music will be reduced (Instagram encourages pro accounts to buy "soundtracks").
  4. Draw up an editorial schedule
    If you can, we strongly recommend that you draw up an editorial calendar so that you can plan your posts over a period of time. This will save you time in terms of organisation.
  5. Work on your publications
    Choose quality visuals and videos!
    A photo (or video) is worth a thousand words!
    The quality of your photos and videos is of CAPITAL importance on Instagram.
    Publications of optimum quality help to attract users' attention and generate interaction.
    Bear in mind that your Instagram account is one of your company's shop windows, so avoid using filters.
    Go for authenticity.
    Make "Stories
    By mentioning a "portal" account such as that of the Tourist Office @lessablesdolonne in order to be seen by the latter and above all to be reposted on the Tourist Office account for greater visibility.
    Make "Reels" too. Your videos should preferably be short (30 seconds to 1 minute) and accompanied by music.
    To choose music that's right up to date, look beforehand at the trendy "Reels" (which work well) and use the audio from them by clicking at the bottom right of the "Reels" in question.
    Create engaging captions to generate engagement with a short, effective text of no more than 125 characters, corresponding, of course, to the theme of the photo or video.
    Look after your feed
    Try to keep your Instagram feed harmonious.
    The best way is to use photos/videos with the same colour scheme and framing.
  6. Use consistent hashtags
    Hashtags (#) are used to reference your posts.
    We recommend using a maximum of ten hashtags in the caption of your photos or videos.
    For our destination, always use the following hashtags:
    #destinationlessablesdolonne
    #lessablesdolonne#vendee
    If the photo is of the day:
    #photooftheday or video#videooftheday and #nofilter if no filter has been applied.
    Or #ocean #atlanticAnd invent a hashtag corresponding to your accommodation/restaurant/tourist site and add it to each publication.

  7. Post at the right time
    Posting at the right time will increase your engagement rate and your brand awareness. Schedule your publications for the times and days when your audience is most receptive and likely to take action. You can start by experimenting with different times to quickly see which works best.
    As a general rule, we recommend posting in the morning at around 7.30am - 8.30am and in the evening at around 8pm - 9.30pm.
    After that, it all depends on your field of activity: if you're a restaurant owner, you should post a little before lunch/dinner to encourage people to come and see you.
  8. Reply to comments and private messages
    It's vital to respond within 48 hours to comments or questions asked on your social networks in general.
    This will prove the seriousness of your business and improve your statistics.
  9. Share your Instagram account on all your platforms.
    It's easy to integrate your Instagram account into your website or brochures.
  10. Use the services of a specialist agency
    You don't always have the relevant ideas or the time to look after your social networks.
    You can enlist the help of a digital agency to help you run and manage your networks as effectively as possible.
    The Tourist Office can provide you with some names of companies.
