Chamber music - English horn, strings and clarinet
An immensely talented composer and pupil of Nadia Boulanger, Jean Françaix composed light, poetic works throughout the 20th century in the pure French spirit of his friend Francis Poulenc. His Quartet for English horn, violin, viola and cello is a sparkling, playful score, like the two Mozart works on the programme for this concert. Written two years before the Austrian composer's death for Anton Stadler, clarinettist with the Imperial Court Orchestra in Vienna, the Quintet in A major bears witness to Mozart's love of the clarinet, whose warm, expressive sound he appreciated. This is followed by two little marvels by the Uzbek-born Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin, well known for her music for theatre and ballet. Here, the strings meet and mingle, eventually sweeping the listener away in a mysterious dance of irresistible crescendo. A sublime concert led by six musicians from the ONPL.
