CONFÉRENCE - D’UN ART DANS LE PAYSAGE À UN ART DU PAYSAGE : LA DIFFUSION DU STYLE PAYSAGER EN VENDÉE AU XIXE SIÈCLE

LES SABLES-D'OLONNE

About

Université Permanente conference.

By Olivier Rialland, geographer and trainer at the Maison familiale rurale in Mareuil sur Lay.

There are around 800 châteaux and dwellings in the Vendée. At the beginning of the 19th century, the geometrical layout of their gardens was almost exclusive, with the eminent place given to the function of providing food.
Often enclosed, gardens were seen as an art form in the landscape.
At the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the composition of the surroundings of aristocratic homes in the Vendée began to break down, but the landscape style did not really take shape until the late 1830s.
From then on, the former gardens with their limited views were transformed into vast parks.
At last, views were explicitly created from the residence out into the distance. The art of the garden became the art of the landscape.
