CONFÉRENCE - JOSÉ DE RIBERA

LES SABLES-D'OLONNE

About

Université Permanente conference.

By Diane Gouard, from Artaban.

José de Ribera was one of the most renowned Caravaggesque painters of his time.
A Spaniard who settled in Italy, he represented the Neapolitan orientation of the chiaroscuro painting that Caravaggio had spread throughout the peninsula.
His art is both rough and poetic.
His uncompromising realism made him one of the great interpreters of human drama, which he excelled at portraying in spectacular compositions.

The Petit-Palais is staging the first French retrospective of this great painter, offering an original perspective on his work by comparing his paintings with drawings and sketches, which are often absent from the work of painters of his period.
