CONFÉRENCE - LES SABLES D’OLONNE, LA NAISSANCE D’UN QUARTIER SARDINIER (1830-1930)

LES SABLES-D'OLONNE

About

Université Permanente conference.

By Hervé Retureau, historian in the Heritage Department of the town of Les Sables d'Olonne since 2020 and author of numerous works on the town and its seafarers, the subject of his thesis.

From 1830 onwards, technical discoveries in the canning industry led to the development of ports along the Atlantic coast.
The port of Les Sables was no exception to this trend and, over the course of the century, became one of the main sardine fishing ports on the Atlantic seaboard.
What impact did this seasonal fishing have on the town as a whole? How was it practised? What was life like for fishing families? These are just some of the questions that will be addressed here.
