Between heritage and modernitý, REYNES is a contemporary dance choreographic piece that is part of an ethnographic approach, which questions what can be reinvented́ in the use of tradition. REYNES is none other than the word "queens", syntactically found at the time in ballet librettos. Drawing inspiration from Sablais headdresses and traditional Sablais folklore, choreographer Julie Fontès-Trameçon has immersed herself in the period in the middle of the 20th century when the Sablaise woman was the emblem of a town, of the city, appearing everywhere on lithographic posters.
The piece opens with a duet embodying a double temporality: the present inscribed in the contemporary and the past recognisable by the wearing of headdresses, the uniformity of costume and the presence of certain steps from the Sablais quadrille danced at the Reines des Sables ball. The choreographer will question and revisit this temporality, in the image of some of her sources of inspiration, such as the great masters of twentieth-century painting: P. Cézanne, M. Chagall, P. Soulages or the great couturiers like Chanel or Y. St-Laurent who, far from desacralising a place or a look, have made it timeless. Following in the footsteps of the Sablais quadrille, 6 dancer-interpreters with multiple personalities, backgrounds and aesthetics will, from the top of their butterfly-winged headdresses, move respectfully and freely within customs and frameworks, blending their origins and roots. Their art is daring, pushing the envelope, thwarting codes in innovative ways. Sovereigns of their art, in a dark universe of traditional sounds and psychedelic pop rock, these 6 REYNES will bring to the stage a dismantling of boundaries around the very identity of the artist. Like bacchantes in a dance that is at once postural and increasingly organic, imbued with skin, memory and sensuality, they will parade through the passing time to form a single body that does not occupy a territory. Instead, it becomes a territory of expression and freedom, combining heritage and modernity in tune with the zeitgeist, in the joy of dancing, freeing ourselves from a body that is all about form.
