Eglise de Saint Mathurin

SAINT-MATHURIN

The church was built to plans by the La Roche-sur-Yon architect Libaudière.
It was completed in 1905, but as a cost-saving measure, it did not have a bell tower.
This one was built more than 20 years later, the first reinforced concrete bell tower in the Vendée, and is 36m high.
Two magnificent 18m² stained glass windows illuminate the transept: the Passion of Christ (based on the painting by Van Dyck), and Jesus' entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.
On 25 June 1949, Cardinal Roncalli (the future John XXIII), on his way to the Festival of the Sea in Les Sables d'Olonne, stopped off to pray.
The church is remarkably bright.
