The tower is inaccessible to the public. It can only be seen from the outside!
Built by the Princes of Talmont in the 15th century, the Protestant leader Soubise seized the castle in 1622 and had fortifications built.
A garrison under Louis XIII, it was bombarded in 1796 by the Anglo-Dutch, bought by the State in 1835 and restored between 1986 and 1994.
The tower is part of the defensive system of the Château Saint-Clair. The first fire was installed in 1593. In the 18th century, La Chaume was the only lighthouse in the Vendée.
Its current form is the result of restoration work carried out between 1857 and 1858.
