Histoire du Vendée Globe

It is the story of friendship in 1987 with three friends (Philippe Jeantot, Bertie Reed and Guy Bernardin) and they make a bet: which of them will loop as fast a race around the world solo non-stop or assistance ?

Presentation of the race : a geant challenge

The challenge is daunting. Golden Globe 1968 (predecessor of the Vendée Globe) is still in our memories: one of the nine registered competitors had managed to return safely within the rules of the race. But the crazy sea and sailing, nothing is impossible. Back, Les Sables d'Olonne (its home port) Philippe Jeantot struggles, finds sponsors and with the support of the General Council of the Vendée, the City of Sables d'Olonne and Crédit Agricole managed to climb his race.

Dream come true

On November 26, 1989 they will be 13 to jump from pontoon Port Olona and 10 to cross, four months later, the arrivée.Philippe Jeantot online and Sables d'Olonne just invented one of the last great modern myths. The public does not make a mistake: success is the appointment. He still has not wavered. Each new edition of the Vendée Globe is an opportunity to large gatherings, each wanting to participate in the one of the last great contemporary adventures.

The race, the route

The Vendée Globe is open to 60 foot monohulls. This is a solo race, from West to East, nonstop and without assistance. It takes place every 4 years. 25 skippers among the best in the world (excluding invitation) are selected. On their way, 3 capes - the Cape of Good Hope - Cape Leeuwin - Cape Horn and 43 000 km of trial, suffering and loneliness. The Vendée Globe deserves its nickname Everest of the seas. Tag by tag, competitors must follow a specific route. Do not respect it, it is automatically disqualified.
